Hello, this is my first post on my new blog. And it’s about importance of unique C-class IP addresses for all your private blogs.
Well, there is already a ton of resource available on internet and you may also know that how important unique C-class IPs are for hiding your PBN and minimizing the chances of giving any footprint.
But few days ago, I made a discovery that really told me that how important unique IPs are for hosting a pbn.
My Discovery about PBN hosting
Just about one and a half week ago, I needed to shift my blogs to a new pbn hosting service for which I had really no time.
But fortunately due to my skills and experience of shifting websites, I knew that it would just take 1 – 2 hours to shift all of my 35 blogs, so I did not hire anyone to shift my blogs.
And I started shifting all my sites on my own one by one, but soon after shifting all the blogs I found something that I wasn’t willing to….
I noted that many of my private blogs had the same A, B and C classes and only the D-class was different…
I literally did not give much attention to the IPs of every cPanel account which I was making for my private blogs….
…that was a big mistake. So I knew that I need to repeat the shifting process again.
But you know we are lazy at times — so was I…
And I decided not to shift all private blogs again but just few which had the exact same IPs (exact A, B , C and D class)…
I had two blogs with exact same IPs and it took me just 10 minutes to shift them on new servers.
But wait, am I doing a mistake? Should I really host my blogs on same A, B and C class IPs? I said to myself “NO”…..
But before starting the shifting process again I decided to wait for a few days to see the impact of having similar IPs for different blogs….
And after 7 days of shifting my blogs to similar IPs with exactly same A, B and C class IPs; I made a disappointing discovery…
My money site’s ranking had gone down from 10th to 18th spot on Google. That was indeed an alarming sign for me…
As you can see in the image above that the effect was very displeasing and I had to think again about shifting all of my blogs to new unique IPs.
My site’s ranking for other keywords was also decreased after shifting the private blogs as shown below:
As you can see that the second keyword suffered more than the first one and at a point it was down to 60 from 6th position.
But wait, did that really happen because of hosting my private blogs on the same A, B and C-class IPs? I decided to make a research.
I went to Google and searched “Why my ranking decreased after shifting PBN?” And shortly I was headed towards this article from Hammerheaddomains.
A paragraph about PBN hosting confirmed my concerns regarding the same IP subnets.
There was a paragraph in which the author claimed that if you only have unique D-class, then your money site will not get all the ranking power from your private blogs.
Here is the exact paragraph:
“Make sure your PBN blogs have different A, B or C class IP addresses. IP addresses look like A.B.C.D (ex. 127.192.1.27). If only the last number, or D-class, is different between different PBN blogs then they will not pass extra ranking power to your money site or client site, and you will also start to accumulate risk of deindexation.”
Now this was enough for me to understand the issue and now I had enough evidence to understand that hosting private blogs on unique IPs is not just related to hide footprints but also for passing greater amount of link juice to money site.
That was it, and finally I start shifting all my private blogs to unique IPs. I used IPs from US Central, US East, US West, Melbourne and Toronto.
The idea was to mix things up so it all looks very natural to Google.
Within 2 days, I was able to get unique IPs for all my PBN sites and I was ready to shift sites again which I did in just a day.
So it’s time to see results, I was hoping to see a little increase in my rankings but I was wrong, it wasn’t a little increase but In-fact my money site was regaining its previous position for all the keywords except one.
As you can see in the image that my site’s ranking was becoming more stable and it started regaining its previous rank and at a time it also climbed up to 4th position which was two times better than my previous position on Google.(Unfortunately it wasn’t recorded on GSC)
After the Google dance my ranking was settled on 8th spot. (Still two spot down than the previous ranking)
What I did next?
Now I had conclusive evidence that unique IPs have value when it comes to passing link juice to money site. But I still had few questions in my mind…..
And they were:
- Is that really important to have unique IPs for all private blogs since many sites on internet are hosted on same IPs, especially sites that are hosted on shared hosting?
- Does Google also take number of referring IPs to a site as a ranking signal?
These two questions were very legitimate and needed to be answered. So I decided to do an experiment.
My plan was to buy 5 more domains to extend my private blog network and to host them on same IP with just unique D-class.
This would help me to get concrete evidence to prove what’s true.
So I bought 5 more domains with good metrics and good number of referring domains…
…I hosted them on similar IPs with just unique D-class and installed WordPress.
I posted 3 articles on each PBN and linked main site from them.
Now it’s time to wait for the results – fingers crossed!
Shortly all my articles from my new private blogs got indexed in Google including those which had link for my money site.
And here are the results…..
As you can see that there was no significant effect of the new backlinks. However, my rankings were more stable now. But still my ranking was not settled and it was going up and down.
I had two options, whether to become happy with the results or shift my private blogs to new IPs.
I chose the second one. Within 1 day I was able to shift all 5 blogs to new IPs….
New IPs were from Singapore, Melbourne, United States and Amsterdam.
Now here are the results…..
As you can see that my rankings shortly got disturb and went down after transferring my new private blogs to new unique IPs, Perhaps my previous activities were also responsible for this change…..
I decided to leave everything in whatever state it was and to track results. For the next one week my rankings keep going up and down – probably it was the Google dance – but then suddenly my rankings start improving and I am still seeing the positive movement.
Right now my site has 3rd position for my keyword.
It is still too early to predict anything but I am watching and tracking everything and will update further regarding the results.
So what’s the deal?
I thought that my experience was very unique and needed to be shared, so I made my effort to tell everyone what I have witnessed.
In the end we have two things proved after my experiment….
- Hosting private blogs on similar IPs with just unique D-class can harm your ranking and Hammerheaddomains’ claim is absolutely correct
- Google also takes number of referring IPs as a ranking signal
Now my second question still stays alive…. What about backlinks from sites that are hosted on shared hosting servers which have the same IPs?
My answer is that probably Google’s algorithms are smart enough to identify IPs of quality hosting companies….
Therefore a site hosted on HostGator or Bluehost shared hosting tends to pass as much link juice as a site that is hosted on unique IP.
My second observation is that Google also takes note of backlinks that are from similar IPs (that only have unique D-Class) and decreases the link juice of such backlinks….
For example, if the A, B and C classes are same but only the D-Class is different, then Google might reduce the link authority.
And I have an argument to prove my claim….Back in old days of SEO; web directories had great importance for SEO.
These directories were many a times owned by same entity and were hosted on the same IPs or similar IPs(with just unique D-Class).
That is why you would have seen many expired domains that would have backlinks from 76 domains, 39 Referring IPs with 20 Referring Subnets.
Such domains have a suspicious link profile because they have majority of links from web directories.
Then Google took an action and reduces the value of web directory links…..
No one really knows how they did it or how their algorithms identify directory links but maybe they do it by targeting backlinks that are from sites that are hosted on similar IPs(with just unique D-class).
So it’s ok to have backlinks from exactly the same IPs… For example, backlinks from 5 different sites hosted on same shared IP from HostGator….
But it’s absolutely dangerous to have backlinks from similar IPs… For example, backlinks from 5 different sites hosted on similar IPs with just unique D-Class.
Of course you can differ from my opinion but tests and trials help us to learn new things and hopefully my experience will be helpful for you.
